Christmas Movies: Elf (2003) Review

3.5/5* Shivs Show | Siobhan Divers

Dir: John Favreau

97 mins

Starring: Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Daniel Tay, Ed Asner, Bob Newart, Peter Dinklage, Amy Sedaris.

An iconic, festive comedy with a top – class cast, Elf should be on your list of Christmas Movies to watch on a cold winter-y night in front of the fire with some hot chocolate and blankets!

“Santa! Oh my God… I know him!!” – Buddy
An orphan baby who sneaked into Santa’s bag one Christmas eve, Buddy (Will Ferrell) is accidently transported to the North Pole and is raised by elfs. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t belong (after some amusing scenes showing him attempt to use miniature appliances), Buddy sets off for New York hoping to find his real father, Walter (James Caan).

It’s funny because Elf wouldn’t be the same with any other actor in the lead – Ben Stiller doesn’t have the same child-like persona, Adam Sandler can be quite annoying, Johnny Depp is known for his more gothic and serious roles and Leonardo DiCaprio plays the more sophisticated gentleman in his newer films. So ultimately the right choice was made with Will Ferrell who plays Buddy the Elf marvelously well – he’s goofy, childlike and lame in a loveable kind of way.

“We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.”
The supporting cast are just as impressive and well-chosen – Zooey Deschanel plays Buddy’s quirky love interest, Jovie while Mary Steenburgen plays his real father’s new wife.

The cast aren’t the only positive elements in the film though. With enough jokes and quotable lines throughout, Elf is continually entertaining, making it an instant classic – being only 15 years old!

Buddy: “I’m singing! I’m in a store and I’m singing! I’m in a store, and I’m singiiing!”
Gimbels Manager: “Hey! There’s no singing in the North Pole!”
Buddy: “Yes there is!”
Gimbels Manager: “No there’s not.”
Buddy: “We sing all the time! Especially when we make toys!”

Charming, innocent, family fun that can be enjoyed by everyone, Elf definitely spreads Christmas cheer!
