Based on a true story, The Hatton Garden Job has some thrilling scenes and a good casting but despite being based on a comical scenario – four old men and one young man attempt to rob London’s Hatton Garden’s – the film isn’t exactly funny. If a humorous bank robbery attempt is what you’re looking for watch Going in Style (2017). If you’re looking to see how the Hatton Garden Job went down though, you’re in the right place of course.
In April 2015, four men robbed 200 million pounds of valuables from a vault in Hatton Garden’s.
2 years later, comes this recreation.
Where the film differs from the real life crime is the addition of the young character and his reason for taking part in the crime.
Matthew Goode plays the young man and handler of the old school crew though he’s not the boss of this operation. Pulling the strings is a Hungarian mob boss played by Joely Richardson. And the complications don’t stop there. There’s an ex copper wanting a share of the loot and there’s the issue that the old men are, well, old…
The four elderly robbers are played by Larry Lamb, Phil Daniels, Clive Russell and David Calder and are humorously dubbed ‘OAP’s 11′ by Daniels’ character.
There’s a few setbacks with the crime itself but the actual robbery scenes are relatively dull, and taken care of with a drill.
An interesting story though, with some tense, thrilling scenes, The Hatton Garden Job is a captivating remake of an incredible real life crime. There’s not many jokes and some quite dull sequences but they’re not enough to spoil an otherwise great movie! 3.5/5*
